Mtofell1, great report I have been wondering about the 6.4 Hemi, sounds like Ram now have a One, Two Punch in the HD Pickup. That being a great gas engine to go with the Cummins diesel.
I only have two questions;
1. Really only 10 to 10.5 pulling 8,500# with your Dmax? I average 12mpg with my RAM over the same hills.
2. Did you take HW6 or HW26 to the coast? Just for comparison purposes
Yeah, the mpg with the Dmax never really impressed me when towing. Rolling down the freeway I could get 12-13 but it was never over 11 up in the hills. The funny thing was the same truck (Dmax) got the same mpg hauling an 11.5K 5th wheel. Maybe a little worse but I remember it was always over 10. I gained maybe .5-1 mpg when switching to the smaller trailer.
One thing to admit is my sample size is pretty small. I really don't tow all that much - maybe 3 times a year on this route so there are all kinds of other factors that could be influencing the mpg one way or another with the various truck/trailer combos.
As for route I was actually down at the central coast. I left Oregon City area and took I205 to I5 south and through Salem, then out highway 22 to hwy 18 into Lincoln City.
