What is different about the GM transmission? My 2500HD seems to operate exactly the same way when M5 is selected. I do tap down to M4 if I see a particularly steep hill coming up. When you say you lock it in 5th, do you mean is will "never" downshift? Even with WOT on a 6% grade?
It will not shift out of 5th until it reaches 1000rpm. It does not matter if I'm WOT, braking, or coasting. It will not leave 5th gear unless I tell it to. With 6 gears, there is usually one that optimizes mileage and power. Same speed and load, running 5th instead of 4th nets .8 mpg better. If I let it shuffle gears, the difference is around .4 mpg.
It is nice for rolling terrain, to just let the speed fluctuate a little, instead of either letting the trans do the unlock/dowshift/upshift boogie, or running a lower gear than necessary to stop that, or not use cruise. I love cruise control, and with any other truck, it will just shift when it decides. Not so with the F150 tow pack.
It makes for a very relaxed towing experience. The 2 biggest complaints folks seem to have about auto's, are running a gear too low in tow haul, or alternatively, frequent shifting. Manual solves both.
