7.3 no start
Got a fella in camp with a 7.3 that has 479,000 miles. It won't start. It smokes out the pipe when he cranks it. I have already talked to him about my opinion. He disagrees. He just keeps charging t...

Could be CPS. Could be glow plugs but plugging the block heater into a generator will get around that. Could also be the HPOP. Really, without a Ford Diesel compatible scan tool (not jut an OBD2 tool) it's a WAG.
Yep.
One other option....Fuel heater circuit. My buddy had to drive from Illinois to Arizona to rescue a friend of his. The guy was snow-birding and one day his 2000 7.3L Dually wouldn't start. He spent about $1600 at a local dealer and it still had the no-start condition. My buddy drove down and brought the truck back to his garage. After just a little diagnosis he found the 30 amp fuse was popped. He tracked it down and unplugged the wire harness for the fuel heater......VOILA rumble rumble, the truck started fine. They later replaced the heater element and the truck is still running fine.
Here's the easy thing. Ask the guy to look in his fuse panel and see if the 30 amp fuse is blown. Also, when he turns the key to the ON position if he DOES NOT get the 'WAIT TO START' message that's another indicator the fuel heater circuit could be the issue.
Here is a Youtube video on Ford 7.3L Fuel Heater Diagnosis and Replacement.
Get some popcorn and enjoy. :B
