I've had more trouble with OEM molded trailer plugs than with the Ford connector. I've replaced several to get better contact. IMO if the electrical contacts are tight, and the trailer plug is pushed in far enough to overlap the contacts, the tab on the cover doesn't really hold much--it's the tight contacts doing the holding. I use the tab to indicate that I've got the trailer plug pushed in all the way. That said, I did have to replace my son's 2002 Super Duty plug last year because it was no longer tight enough.
