A Couple Problems with 2007 Ram 2500

Last winter while snowbirding we had a couple problems that caused the engine to completely shut down. The check engine light came on and the overhead console
Had the message see dealer now. We had it towed to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a fuel pressure valve. The second time we were towing on our way home and it
Happened a second time. We were in Ely Nv this time and had it towed to the dealer. This time it was diagnosed as the fuel pump. It was replaced and it ran fine the rest
Of the way home.
Can these really be the cause of the engine shutting down?
Are these common problems with these trucks?
What would cause these failures?
I was told by adding a diesel additive or ATF to the fuel it would lubricate and maybe prevent fuel pump failure? Any truth to that?
Truck only has 53K miles on it.

Thanks

Damage to a fuel pump is cumulative. In other words a couple of tanks of bad fuel may not kill it but several tanks over time can.

Adding ATF/fuel conditioner to the fuel is a good idea on older rigs as seals and other parts in a pump may require a type of lube or conditioner thats missing in additive packets in todays fuels. If your using 1 or 2 sources for your fuel you may want to use a additive on ocassion. Generally most folks use several different fuel brands and stations so a partial tank of fuel that missed the additive package will not kill the pump or other fuel related parts. Damage is cumulative though.
If your trucks fuel tank has had bad fuel in it I would look in on Cummins.com fuel additive website and see whats available or a email to their tech folks for their input.
  • It's has to be a 6.7L Cummins (2007.5). The 5.9L 07 trucks (like mine) don't have the ability to say "see dealer" in the OH console. It's just temp/mpg/compass/trip.
  • By the way , which engine is it , two different Cummings in 07 . My 07 has the 5.9 engine and 167,000 miles with no problems . I would have thought that the fuel filter would have prevented damage to the pumps , do these things have two pumps , lift and pressure ?
  • Couple years ago, I had a similar problem with my 08. Engine lost power and stopped. Felt like I was going up a really steep grade but I was on interstate in eastern ND. Had it towed to dealer. Plugged filter in exhaust system. Faulty sensor. Replaced under warranty. Not a problem since.
  • Maxwell11 the repair shop thought it was probably due to some bad fuel as others have stated. Not sure where I would've picked it up. We refuel mostly at name brand places but that's not always possible. But isn't that the job of the fuel filter to eliminate fuel impurities? Guess we need to be more careful in the future.
Would the fuel pump fail right after a fill up or 1 or 2 tanks later?
  • gas,

I use diesel Kleen in my 2005 dodge diesel from time to time.

72K miles, no fuel related problems.

I use Baldwin oil and fuel filters. I also use the 4" thick std air filter.

    so far so good,

did the repair shops have any suggestions why the early fuel related failures?

  • I agree with Cool. Looks like you got ahold of some bad fuel.

How many times have you changed the fuel filter in 50K?

BTW, ATF belongs in the transmission and for sure not in the fuel system of a modern TD engine.
  • Sounds as if at some point you got some bad fuel. Has your fuel filter been changed regularly? I don't use additives, and certainly wouldn't put 2-cycle oil in my fuel tank. Good luck.
