A/C replacement to Vent- Lance

I'm trying to replace my A/C unit with a normal vent on my Lance 825. I am hoping someone can tell me if I can simply remove it and screw into the TPO roof. Doing a little browsing I noticed that Lance uses "screwless" vents on the rest of their campers and was wondering if a normal vent will work? Thanks-:)
  • The hole that the ac mounts through is the standard vent cutout so replacing the ac unit with a vent should be as easy as buying a standard complete vent assembly and installing it with suitable sealant on the roof membrane side. AC units all use a compression style mount system far as I know (no holes), The lower flange 'squeezes' the upper flange for securing the unit.
  • Thanks, I'm worried that the TPO and foam won't hold screws like wood. I guess it's not a space shuttle and will just try to screw it on....
  • You don't need much force to hold the flange.
Use a lot of butyl tape under the flange as this is main seal and retorque the screws few days later on warm day.
The caulk on top is just band-aid.
Are you planning to install Fantastic fan?
  • Yes, you can just screw through the membrane - that's how they're all installed.

I agree with everything sidecar said. I replaced a non working unit on an old coachman and it was a 14 x 14 whole. The vent went rite in through the top and sealed at the top with SS screws, putty tape with a seal of self leveling epoxy. The lower side goes rite up and installs with screws. You'll have to cap off the electric and shut the circuit breaker. Good luck! I had to drill holes...
  • On the not so Fantastic Fan, If you are going to put one in, I'd suggest looking at alternative models. Reason I say that is the one I have failed 3 times before I got a good one. That is three motor / fan assemblies before I got a good one and even though they warranted each one, the motors cannot be disassembled to attempt a fix, the cases are welded together.

Of course the motor / fan assembly was made off shore.
  • Thanks, I'm just gonna use a standard vent. I've had good luck with fantastics in the past but I'm gonna use the $100+ saved to put a dent in my solar panel project. We camp mountains and beach so it's always under 75.:C

Very sad how they've gone down hill after the buy-out.
When you get one that works, the new motors are noisier too.
I would definitely compare other brands.
  • I just bought replacement motor/fan assembly for 17 years old Fantastic.
    So far so good.
What turn really upsetting, the old motor seems to be good. I replaced it becouse of erratic work and age and only when removing - I found that the cable nut on top of the fan loosen up and likely that was the only problem with old one.
Fantastic changed ownership, but new CS did respond with replacement part number I need for old unit and I found it for $28.
Are they any other choices between Fantastic and that miniature teeth rattler?

I think Max Air makes one Kayteg. The new motors case is welded shut. I'm not impressed at all. Mine is pretty quiet but I added rubber grommets to the frame mounting where the motor frame assembly secures to the housing. I think (not sure 100%) that Dometic bought them out last year.

So far, so good after 2 tries. Both mine were replaced, no charge but I had to return the defective ones at my expense.

I don't have ac either. With a pop up, the entire top is screened so always a nice breeze coming through and I rarely camp where it's hot anyway.

I'm going to add another power vent where the non powered one is, probably the Max Air. They are all 14 x 14.
