Adapter sleeve for 2 1/2 receiver

I use a spacer for a year and had more wear and slop than I ever had with the regular 2" receiverv in my old truck. Luckily I could get a 2.5" shank from Curt that works well with my Equal-I-Zer with 1.25" hole spacing. And Equal-I-Zer makes one too. They weight ~10 lbs more but are worth it.

Problem solved.

I too had 2" inserts when I bought my 2015 Ram 2500. The Ram came with the hitch adapter and I've used it many times with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

I used the OEM mopar 2" adapter with my 17 and a curt extended drop shank and had no issues at all. I don't know what slop others are referring to but i don't hear any slop in my setup at all. Sure a 2.5" shank would be great, but i didn't want to pay double the cost and of what i paid for my 2" on amazon. Plus i could not find a 2.5" with enough drop

I went from a 1500 Silverado with a 2.0 to a 2500 RAM with a 2.5, and I use the adapter that came with the RAM.

As for my shank, I had to get a new one, as I sit higher now. I got this on Amazon and it has been great:

I welded a sleeve into mine. And glad I used the sleeve and a 2 inch shank instead of the 2.5 inch. I broke down and had to have the truck and trailer towed. Was in the middle of nowhere. Tow truck put my truck on the flat bed and had to use my hitch to tow the trailer. He had a 2 inch receiver. If I had the 2.5 inch shank Im not sure what we would have done.

I think a lot depends upon your tongue weight. Mine is prolly around 1300# now with the four batteries on the tongue. Also, being retired, we put a lot of miles on the trailer. So things do get beat up.

After several years, the wear on our previous 2" receiver was such that I had to re-adjust the tilt of the Equal-I-Zer tension bars to compensate. There was over an inch of up/down play where the bars sat on the hangers.

With the new truck and 2.5" receiver, we got almost that amount of play after only a single year when using the 2" sleeve and the old 2" shank. There was also some "egging" of the pin hole in the receiver. So I switched to a 2.5" Curt shank which fits much tighter.

Generally, I think if your tongue weight is 1000-1200# or over, a 2.5" receiver and shank will last a lot longer than 2". Not sure at what TW you would want a 3".

I do carry the sleeve and a light weight, non-WDH hitch in the truck for those times when the WDH is too much trouble and unnecessary.
