Or a 2800# camper and 600 pounds of stuff. We had a great 8.5s&s that weighed about that for a load about 3500. S&S's are pretty heavy but you don't HAVE to take a thousand pounds of stuff with.....
If you are very uncertain about what sort of camper you want I would hedge my bet and definitely go used. Someday I might go new but only if I were 100% sure I HAD to have that perfect model. But shopping new is great.
Another option is to take a short trip via plane to somewhere that has a ton of dealers to go look at new. That usually ends of being Denver or the Pacific Northwest or maybe SoCal.. You can do a LOT of shopping in a short time that way.
