- KarenS144ExplorerThanks for the suggestions! It's always helpful to know what attractions there are in an area. It's way better than finding out about cool stuff after we leave.
- Astoria Column is something to see.
Ft Clatsop outside Warrenton and the Lewis & Clark salt Cairn in Seaside.
We use to stay at "RV Resort at Cannon Beach" - CA_TravelerExplorer IIIAnd the Lewis and Clark Fort in Astoria and the kayak tour on the Lewis and Clark River was also very interesting.
- CA_TravelerExplorer IIILewis and Clark Golf and RV Resort is the nicest CG in Astoria. Take the kids out on the golf course and have fun, it's a basic course and very uncrowded. I had fun and I'm not a golfer...
Ft Stevens would be my second choice or maybe first as it has a lot to offer. I really liked the kayak tour on Coffenbury Lake in the park.
In Astoria DO NOT MISS the Maritime Museum (about $7). Both kids and adults will enjoy this museum. And then DO NOT MISS the Waterfront Trolly ($2) which you pick up right in the parking lot and it's fun and enjoyable. And finally DO NOT MISS the Rogue Brewery and Salmon Canning Museum (free) which is located on the east end of the trolly run and out on a pier. The Column is another popular attraction.
Want to know what the Columbia River can do and why about 300 ships didn't survive it's bar? Visit the museum. And the cannon found on Cannon Beach started it's underwater journey in Astoria. :@ - D_E_BishopExplorerJust to let you know that ODOT installed so many turnouts so that RVs can stop often to remove the bicyclists from their rearview mirrors.
All kidding and quotes from the funny, funny books about Oregoonians aside. The drive is fantastic and there are a lot of turnouts so visitors can stop and smell the roses while letting the speed demons rush by. If you do a search for The Oregon Coast, you will have a months worth of reading. There are so many places to stop, eat and commune with whom ever or whatever you wish. The Oregon State Parks are great but especially crowded during the summer. There are many, many private parks too so look for them in Trailer Life, and AAA camping books. - Mr_BigglesExplorerWe are making the same trip for three weeks in July. I have already booked the first 17 days. Staying at State Parks along the coast. The last 4 days will be in the Salem area. I'm expecting the roads to be similar to Banff/Jasper National Parks in peak season.
- Highway_4x4ExplorerFort Stevens is so nice I could stay there for a week.
- mtofell1ExplorerThe KOA in Lincoln City is a nice spot that you should be able to get into with little or no reservation. It's nothing spectacular and is 5 minutes inland from the coast but is a nice place to explore from.
The highway isn't really a problem. Running through the big cities midweek would be preferable if you have the choice. There are plenty of nice big pullouts along the way. Just not many right in the big cities. IMO, the most beautiful part of the drive is between Depoe Bay and Newport.
I'd definitely take it in groups... north coast - Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Tillamook day 1, Tillamook to Lincoln city there isn't much to see. Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Newport day 2. Then on from there for day 3+.
Restaurants and attractions:
Lincoln City - Kilos, Mo's, nice set of outlet mall shopping, Chinook Winds Casino if that's your thing (good RV dry RV parking in their lot).
Depoe Bay - Tidal Raves
Newport - The Bay front is nice, also another Mo's if you didn't catch it in Lincoln City - KarenS144ExplorerWe hope to be in that line of southbound RVs on 101 down the Oregon coast this summer too. We're planning on picking up 101 at Astoria and going to Reedsport before heading east to Collier Memorial State Park. I was planning on 3 days to make the approximately 200 mile trip and staying somewhere in Astoria then a stop about half way & a night near Reedsport.
Any advice on places to stay or must stops? We'll have a toad. - CA_TravelerExplorer IIIAnd when you see a sign for a pullout slow down and stop as they have much to offer.
