Advice on ultra lite upgrade

Howdy folks. Always find good info here. I currently have a 2007 Jayco Jayfeather sport 165, and am wanting to go up a notch in size. Wife wants a bigger bed. But I have limited indoor storage space (@ 22ft total length inc. tongue, and max 9'8" high to get through the door). definitely Want to stay with alum frame, and composite FG walls (preferably with no wood) and light weight. Looked at the Gulf Stream Visa 19, but seems they have some axle issues, also at Coachmen Apex 18BH which is nice. I'd really like 2 axles while keeping the total GVW under 4000lbs. I'd like to find something a couple years old and under @$13K.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
Greg

  • Brayhaven,
We have towed a 2010 Visa 19ERD for a couple years and the tires are wearing OK (looks like I will get at least 7500 miles on the $75 bias ply tires), so I guess there is a chance an axle will be OK. Philip Abele (on the facebook Visa forum I think) found the tires on his Visa wearing badly, so he went to a frame shop and they straightened his axle - I didn't even know you could do that to a torsion axle! So, thanks to Philip, there is a more inexpensive solution if Visa owners have the problem.

For your info, since March 2013, new Visa 19's have a heavier duty axle (rated 4000lbs instead of 3500), next size up tires, and 4" higher off the ground. And they changed the name to Vista Cruiser. All needed changes - except the name change - now I suppose I will be searching on two different names!

Don't assume that a bigger trailer will have a bigger bed. You have to physically check them out. If you are not in a hurry I would recommend going to the Tampa RV show which will be after the first of the year. All the big name rigs are there. Wear shoes that you can kick off and try the beds.

You can go home with a mess of brochures to read.

That's the truth. Our T@B's bed (larger than queen, smaller than king) is larger than the bed in my mom's motorhome.

Several years ago at an RV show, we'd peek in and announce "midget bed" and move on... Most all had small beds.
  • Thanks Sunbird. I found a 2 yr old Gulf Stream Visa 19RGU for under 10K with a walk around queen bed. Even if I have to change out the axle, it will be OK at that price. That show sounds like a good place to drool & spend money :).
