Air Conditioner Installation DIY?

Has anyone installed their own Air Conditioner? Initially I thought I wouldn't have an air conditioner this time because historically I didn't use them. Trip to Florida is in my future!! Is this something I should pay an RV dealer to do or is this something I should consider doing myself?

Camper is suppose to be pre-wired for AC. I was thinking of getting a Coleman Mach 8 9200 btu unit. I am guessing that the Mach 8 9200 is basically a renamed Coleman Polar Cub? Any places that are preferred to order from?

  • I have installed two. Hardest part is removing the vent (sticky mess) and getting the A/C on top of the TC. After those two things are behind you, the rest was easy.
  • I removed mine and sold it on CL. I had it all unhooked and let the buyer take it down. They are a little heavy my reason for selling it. I never used mine even in AZ. Its an easy install I guess but I am a licensed builder.
  • Tweetys, PPL, Adventure RV.........all 3 are good to deal with. So go for best overall pricing (unit cost/shipping)

First...check that it is wired for AC. Should be plate on ceiling where wiring is. And a space in AC CB panel for a breaker.

Help lifting/setting it into roof opening is best.
  • I bought mine from Adventure RV, even with shipping it was the lowest price I found. I had it installed, 2 hours labor.
  • Use Loctite on the bolts that clamp it to the ceiling/roof, otherwise they WILL loosen over time, then you will get leaks when it rains.

THis happened to me twice, then I Loctited them.

Trust me, I've been Google searching like crazy. But I like hearing from fellow RV'ers who have used one of the above places and come highly recommended. Sometimes it's better to spend a couple more dollars and get parts from a highly recommended source.

  • Mike , I'm going to try again third time replying. Yes you can install a Ac unite. If your handy with tools have a friend to help you don't try it alone. If you buy a new one read all the instructions! Watch a U tube video. Take your time. If used, buy new gaskets . make sure your camper is wired . on line research will help. If you get close to western NC stop by and say hi. Oh you might find a used one on Craigslist . good luck!
