I have seen semitrucks driven at 110 mph in the times when fuel was cheap (15 years ago). From what I know they did not have 500 hp at the time.
Sure about that? My 2002 International Eagle coventional with a Caterpillar 3406 puts 620 to the ground and factoring in parasitic loss, around 710 flywheel.
The old engines were a snap to turn up. You just shimmed the pump. New electronic engine not so easy.
Most trucks, old or new are governed for top speed so you probably saw an OO with a cranked up motor.
I knew an OO with a cabin over K'whopper with a Cummins KTA that was making 1000 horses to the drives. It wasn't for speed, it was for hauling heavy up hills without looking heavy...
Finally, I worked for a small fleet owner way back when that had a 60's K'Whopper with a 1693 Cat running a 4x4 that would bust 120 mph anyday, loaded. The 1693 was a railroad locomotive engine.
