ALLISON 3000 DAMAGE

well it was bound to happen, just didn't expect it to happen so soon, our truck is broke down, today I noticed an oil spot under the truck, a 1999 Freightliner FL-60 Sport Chassis with a 300hp CAT motor, after I crawled under it the transmission oil seemed to by coming from an inspection plate on the bottom of the bell housing, hmmm after looking closer I noticed the bolts have backed up of the bell housing and the transmission ( a 3000 series Allison 6 speed ) is hanging down, all the top bolts have backed out and 2 are missing, 4 of the bottom bolts are the only thing holding the trans to the engine, another thing there is no transmission cross member supporting this monster, after tightening up all the bolts that were left and removing the inspection plate, the trans is still leaking, well pouring fluid out, hopefully its just a seal that was damaged from hanging down, next step is call good sams and have it towed to a shop near cottonwood, AZ
  • a rebuilt transmission is on its way from GLOBAL INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATICS in Tucson, AZ, bad news is $4500 + instalation co$ts
  • well the truck is in the shop and will give you all an update when i get one

thanks ronniedean, and a very nice Freightliner you have sir

Thanks wirenutz and again good luck.....
  • Sorry for your troubles, hopefully it is only the front seal that's the problem. I had my Allison 3000 out during an engine replacement last year, there is no cross member on the back side of the tranny, yes there is a torque spec just like any vehicle on the bell housing bolts, sounds like to me someone dropped the ball and hopefully it's not to costly of a fix, good luck....
  • Yep that's going to leave a mark. As asked above has there been any trans work done that would account for the bolts working there way out? Bolt on a bell housing is not something anyone would check during a maintenance repair like an oil change IMO.

Hope it doesn't cost to much to repair, but it sounds like the front pump is going to be toast.

    Don
  • sch911, yes the engine was pulled and refurbished 2 years ago, I suspect someone didnt torque the bolts down
  • Damage? Sorry to hear about your woes. But it sounds more like neglect, or improper repair. Has that tranny ever been out before?
