Almost decision time

Long story short: DH and I have decided that enough is enough. Tired of playing "whack-a-mole" with fixing one thing after another on older RV's, and have decided to buy new.

We took some research on the road today and looked at several models. With our floorplan desires (want a walk-around bed), weight limits (we can tow more, but would like to keep the "loaded and ready to camp" weight around 5200-5400 lbs), and a few other needs, today we set foot in the following...

Coleman CTS16QB - obviously the sticker price is appealing, and I like the J-dinette and bed arrangement, but the kitchen was a bit lacking- stove, sink, and fridge were all very small, but counter space was very good. Also I have some questions about construction quality, and the cargo capacity is lacking a quite a bit.

Keystone Springdale 189FL - not thrilled with the bed placement, but a good compromise in features/perceived construction quality between the Coleman and the Premier.

Keystone Passport 238ML - getting pricier and heavier. Liked the construction and features, not so much the bed layout.

Keystone Premier 19FB - very nice, great layout, a lot of good features. A bit pricey for our budget, and a little on the heavy side, but we could make it work.

The problem with all of the Keystone models we looked at was the length, all were between 23 and 24 feet. Our TV's wheelbase is 127", and that seems like the maximum we should pull with that. I don't like taking things to the max, which translates to really needing a 20-21 foot trailer.

JayFlight 22FB - the only one I didn't take notes on. I think we decided the dry weight was too much right off the bat. Could be mistaken.

We also looked at several Pacific Coachworks and Starcraft models that I was not pleased with.

Our local dealer is obviously heavy on the Keystone products, and although there wasn't one on the lot, I am curious about the Passport 195rb. Anyone out there have one? It seems to be a price point that I could live with, and well within our weight desires, with a nice floorplan.

  • I just bought this model at the Hershey RV show will get it in 10 days,
  • Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we have another front-runner: Remington 2100 FBS, after scbwr pointed us in that direction.

It has the exact floorplan we want - walk-around bed up front, a sofa instead of a booth dinette, and a big bathroom in the rear. Far more trailer for our buck than the Coleman, shorter and lighter than the Passport, and shorter, lighter, and far less expensive than the Premier. The 43 gallon water tank is a big plus, too, since we almost never camp with hookups. Sometimes electric, but almost never water.

Dry weight is 3,840 with a GVWR of 5,500, so with a full water tank and stuffed to the gills with, well, "stuff", we are still at a weight I am comfortable pulling.
Weekend after next we will take a drive up to Hesperia and take a look at one in person. We are still a few weeks from being able to make a deal, but at least I now have an option that works for us, in our budget :)
  • I did like the Premier, but dollars aside, it is a little heavy for our needs. I'm curious about the Passport 195rb, didn't get to see one, but think it might be a better fit for us.

As for the Coleman, I have reservations about that side AC and the quality of the cabinetry. Also about the "sturdiness" of it in general, and if the single axle is going to lead to problems down the road.
  • Sounds like you really like the Keystone Premier 19FB.

What questions did you have about the Coleman and it's construction?
