I think they're trying to be more fuel efficient, so newer Jeep models are sleeker. They figure they can appeal to a fuel conscious commuter, rather than off road or towing capabilities. The bigger grand Cherokee and smaller wrangler are 2 different markets, while the liberty was sort of in between. I think it's a great balance though, and with a name like liberty? Yep, I'll take it
If you want more power from a liberty, look for a dodge nitro! They are about 10-12" longer wheelbase and could be had with the 4.0LV-6!
