Okay, these are Fireweed on the north and south sides of Alaska's Brooks Range (between Fairbanks and Prudoe Bay), July 4, 2012. It was in bloom and quite vivid in great fields!





Plants bloom from low on the stem, upward. By the time blooms reach the top, winter is imminent. The natives use the plant as a seasonal gauge.
