Amsoil OE Synthetic

Question... as the API Seal/License on prospective engine oil manufactures labels is voluntary, what makes brand X with API Seal/License better then brand Y which doesn't have the API Seal/License and is exactly the same oil?

You see, API seals are, from American Petroleum Institute website:

API’s Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS) is a voluntary licensing and certification program that authorizes engine oil marketers who meet specified requirements to use the API Engine Oil Quality Marks

as you might have guessed, an engine oil manufacture has to pay for the API Seal/License and its not cheap, as well has to yearly to maintain that API Seal/License .

Amsoil was the first 1972 "API rated" synthetic engine oil produced and sold. They don't carry the API Seal because the refuse to pay the "Ransom", API charges for their License fee.

I don't trust Amsoil products...

Amsoil is probably better than no oil. If it tastes good, use it.

Approved by who? I found on Amsoil's website that Amsoil "recommends" their oil for cars that require MS-6395. I see nothing that states their oil is approved by Chrysler for use in Chrysler vehicles.

Ah, never mind. I just realized you were referring to Pennzoil.

Mobil 1 is not approved. Mobil super obviously is, which you linked too. But Mobil 1 is not.
Like I said earlier, the only reason that means anything to me is for warranty purposes. Mobil 1 is a fine oil and will not harm the engine.

I didn't catch the "recommended" part of the amsoil. Sneaky on their part. Either way, my opinion is the same as the Mobil 1. Fine oil, won't harm a thing other than warranty.
Just a money grab is all it is.

Most Amsoil products are NOT approved by any manufacturer nor are they tested and certified by the API, the standard for lubricants. Sure some of them are, but the majority are NOT. Also, several engine manufacturers a couple years back, flat stated that they did NOT recommend any oil that was not API certified, which Amsoil sued over. If they want to sell a decent product, then get it certified, don't use look alike symbols and try to fool the public.

If my math is correct you are changing the oil at about 5500 mile but the OLM light is coming on at 9-10000 miles. Do you not trust the longer interval? Just curious.

Few points,

I bought our van in June 14 and we just crossed 22k miles. I am about to complete the fourth Oil Change. The OLM doesn't come on until 9-10k miles.


We drive a lot at highway speed. I drive hard too. Not so much drag racing launches and stuff like that. The RPM range is there to use. Right?

As far as Amsoil price, the OE is $6.99 a quart and does indeed carry the Chrysler certification for my Fantastic Pentastar. This is not the $12 a quart stuff for Long OCI. The OE doesn't have a 25 k OCI. It's to be used with OLM's.

I get a good chuckle when folks start talking about the extended interval between oil changes, like the 25,000 mile claim. Amsoil gets just as dirty, just as contaminated, just as quick as any other oil. It's an over priced, over rated money maker for the producers, and has an almost cult like following. It gives credence to the old saying about a fool and his money being easily parted. It's really no better than any other fully synthetic lubricant. And yes, there are many tests out there that prove that.
