Forgot to touch on why a rebuild is in order...
A diff is a one speed gear box on our trucks
Gear boxes generally 'whine' when issues come up with bearings, lube, etc
Gear Boxes that make the kind of noises you state...means stuff is broken in there
and will only get worse no matter what kind of fluid you put in there
I'd sue the shop that did the initial damage, but they can make a case that you
drove it too long making that noise to exacerbate the issue
