Good morning to all, I'm looking at a 2012 dodge ram 3500,cummins dually 2 wd 6 speed auto.good car fax,157000 miles what should I look for as far as checking it out, this is my first diesel. thanks for any & all replys
We would be better off finding a 2013+ with DEF system. Better mileage and less emissions problems.
New trucks in some cases can be purchased for not that much more than used ones. Interest rates are lower on new also.

Ram GVWR and towing numbers were pretty conservative until 2013! Check the GVWR on that 2012 DRW likely less than 12,000#!
2012 was 13000# I believe.
Mine is 12,300.
I stand corrected. Just looked at the body builder guide and in 2012 a 2wd crew cab DRW only had 11,500 GVWR. My 2013 SRW 4X4 CC SB had 11,700. My 2016 SRW Mega Cab has 12,300. - Cummins12V98Explorer III"Mine is 12,300."
My 11 HO RAM Dually was also. - Grit_dogNavigator

I disagree about new and used costing about the same. You just have to be willing to look. I've always saved 10-15 grand buying slightly used vehichles. A Certified Pre-Owned rig is the best deal out there. Low miles, usually a 7 year 100k warranty, plus no depreciation driving off the lot.
Just have to do a little legwork. I've only bought one brand new vehicle in 50 years, and only because I didn't have time to put in the effort that year.
Best price nationwide I found when shopping for my current truck was $70,500. Found a used CPO of exactly what I wanted right down to the color for $62k out the door. Factor in the difference in sales tax and I saved almost $10k.
That's a lot of coin to save considering the truck had only 3,970 miles on it.
I wish you were right, but luck of stumbling on a good used deal on a newer diesel is like hens teeth. Awesome you found one, but I’ve been pretty diligently scouring for a new car and truck for a couple years now. Threw in the towel on the car and bought a new leftover ‘16 recently. Haven’t found a truck.
Find me a 2015 and up low mile Black Mega Cab 3500 diesel please for $10k less than Dennis Dillon sells them for and I’ll be on a plane with a cashiers check!
Not booking my ticket though.....
Think I can wait on the truck until the economy tanks again , maybe. Youngest will be 12 in a few months, so I got 4 years before he gets the ole Dodge! - Bionic_ManExplorer

- ford_coupeExplorerthanks to all replies truck in florida all its life price a little high, looking at 2013-2015 have a great say all
- rowekmrExplorerIf OP planned on keeping truck stock then I second the newer 13+ with def which get better mpg's not to mention power. Of course tunes/deleted can change all of that for the 2012. But price is another criteria that can make it a great deal regardless.

And there in lies the problem. If these trucks are used to put around a lot that's when they have issues. And speaking about fuel dilution, the grocery getters crankcase would be full of diesel from constant regens.
If run mostly highway miles then your ok.- Cummins12V98Explorer IIIMy 11 had zero issues with less than .05% fuel dilution. Never used as a grocery getter.
