Ford F350 2012 - Diesel

Ford diesel pickups had lots of problems that continued through the 2010 model year. After that they have been a lot more reliable and this includes the engine and its components and the transmission and other aspects of the truck. The engines in the earlier trucks got all the attention but these trucks had lots of other problems are best avoided. Some people were lucky and had no problems but many people were not lucky.

Check Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book for the price. Problem I found when looking for a used diesel truck was that all the owners paid way too much when they bought them new. Most still owed $35,000 on a 3 year old truck. I gave up trying to find a used one at a reasonable price and instead bought a new diesel pickup truck fully loaded for under $42,000. This is a good time to look for a new 2014 sitting on a dealer's lot and a local dealer can check in their computer and find all the 2014 trucks within 500 miles and do a trade to get it for you.

That price sounds pretty high, I paid $52 for mine brand new off the lot (Lariat without FX4) and I don't think I really got that great of a deal. Maybe you need to come to Alberta and buy one in truck country.

I would agree. Price is too high. You should be able to get a new one for low 50's here in Canada. New you will get full warranty plus 2 or three years of improvements.
I paid $52,000 new but not quite as loaded. I would pass.
As others have said any mods will void warranty. Diesels can be big $$$$$ to repair. The newer ones also have more power and an improved turbo. In my opinion for the price not worth it.

Not sure I would mess with that then. This truck does not need more power factory settings. It has it in abundance.

Not sure about the deletes mentioned or the programmer, but with either one there goes any warranty.

That price sounds pretty high, I paid $52 for mine brand new off the lot (Lariat without FX4) and I don't think I really got that great of a deal. Maybe you need to come to Alberta and buy one in truck country.

I've been following the Ford 6.7L diesel forum on http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum205/ for over a year.
There have been no consistent recognized problems with this engine and truck.
The first year 2011 models had a few problems - radiator leaks primarily. Do a search for "radiator leaks" to brush up on the subject if you plan on buying a used truck.
There were one or two reports on rear end wheel hop.
But, as a rule, this is a very good truck.

Have not experienced any vibration on my '12 F350 when towing my 35' 5er, on the flats or the Colorado mountains.

It does have an engine brake and works well for me. And as noted, it works only while in tow/haul mode. When starting down a mountain pass, if I just ease down on the brake the exhaust/engine brake does not engage. But if I press harder (not jab it) it does engage and starts holding the speed. Rarely need to touch the brake pedal again unless grade is really steep. I even use it when not towing if I am decending a particularly steep winding grade and need to go slow and don't want to ride the brake.

The available Power Stroke® 6.7L Turbo Diesel V8 with 6-speed TorqShift® SelectShift® automatic transmission and tow/haul mode utilizes seamless engine-exhaust braking and selective gearing to improve control on steep downhill grades and minimize brake wear.

Agreed, but I can't help but wonder how the CP4 pump failure rates will do when these trucks get say 8-10 years plus old with a few miles on them. Owners will be well out of warranty facing a huge repair bill. The cost of that repair could easily exceed the value of the truck at that point. Just food for thought.

No vibration on my truck which has about 50K on it.

As for the engine brake, it works but you have to learn the trick of getting it to kick in. First the truck has to be in tow/haul mode. Then when you start down a hill you give the brake pedal a solid hard quick tap. Hopefully that engages the EB and if if does you'll feel it. You can then take your foot off the accelerator and coast down the hill at about the same speed that you engaged the EB at. I usually aim for 45. If it doesn't engage then try some more taps on the brake. Not the best system which is why they added a switch in 2015 model.
