My thoughts exactly! We don't know the price that's being asked, but it could be a great truck for the right price. - rmoparmanExplorerI bought a new Dually 17 RAM Aisan Tranny 373 gears Tradsman for 53K out the door.
Keep looking - Bionic_ManExplorerThat is the truck that I have. And it has been completely trouble free (that said, my truck is completely recreational. I would estimate that 80% of the miles have been towing something). Almost all the rest would be road trips going hunting.
I use an app to track my mileage. My lifetime mileage is 10.82. If you look at fuelly, they have tracked 102 vehicles for over 2,000,000 miles, and their average is 11.8.
2013 - 2018 average somewhere between 11.9 - 15.7, so there probably is a penalty for the non-DEF emissions system.

I have no complaints about my truck, but if I were buying today, I would get the newer truck, mainly because I always would opt for more power, and I would like the higher output engine and the Aisin transmission.
I'm terrible about budget creep. Looking past 2012 would likely lead me to 2016. And then I would figure out that you really don't save much cash buying a newer, low mileage diesel vs brand new.
Have fun with your search. I hope you find what you are looking for. - transamz9Explorer

Good morning to all, I'm looking at a 2012 dodge ram 3500,cummins dually 2 wd 6 speed auto.good car fax,157000 miles what should I look for as far as checking it out, this is my first diesel. thanks for any & all replys
We would be better off finding a 2013+ with DEF system. Better mileage and less emissions problems.
New trucks in some cases can be purchased for not that much more than used ones. Interest rates are lower on new also.

Ram GVWR and towing numbers were pretty conservative until 2013! Check the GVWR on that 2012 DRW likely less than 12,000#!
2012 was 13000# I believe. - Grit_dogNavigatorTHat said, it could be a very nice truck. Don’t automatically dismiss it. Just do your homework on it.

I wouldn't recommend a dpf equipped diesel without def for a first time diesel owner. There's much better options out there.
This. Unless it’s been deleted. I know my way around diesels and I wouldn’t buy one unless it was deleted or I’d be able to (no emissions testing) if needed. - I wouldn't recommend a dpf equipped diesel without def for a first time diesel owner. There's much better options out there.

Chris - DutchmenSportExplorerNot knowing where you are from, or where you are planning on purchasing the vehicle from, if you live in a snow state, look for rust. Engine and transmission may be fantastic, but if the frame begins to rust out, there won't be much to hold it all together for long, let alone pull anything with it.
I sold a gas 3500 dully, 4 door long bed that had around 120,000 miles on it. Pulled and towed remarkable. But had a service check on it, and my repair shop advised I not tow with it any more. The frame was rusting so bad, it ran the risk of pulling the truck in half under a load. I got rid of the truck and ended up with a newer dully diesel long bed, crew. Best move I could have made.
So, engine and transmission are probably just fine! But check for rust eating through. Transmission and engine will far outlive the body and parts!
Edit:
Had this second truck a few years, it was an absolute remarkable vehicle for towing. But it had a fiberglass body. Well, the fiberglass started spider cracking on the fat fenders. It got so bad I really thought chunks of the truck bed skin would fall off in massive pieces. I checked into replacing them, but at $4000 for one side of the truck bed was more than I could handle. (and both sides need it). I traded again for my 3rd truck. Another diesel dually long bed 3500 crew cab. Metal body (brand new when bought) so hopefully I'll have this one a few years longer.
Indiana is just horrid on automobile bodies!
