The camper age thing has more to do with attitudes toward how to handle long term 'visitors' than anything else. Apparently it is not uncommon for people to show, 'break down', and stay for an extended period of time, or at least that's what I keep hearing.
As for the tow vehicle, our truck is a '98 and we have never had an issue with it's age or mileage (knock on wood!) since just about any shop can easily still get parts and we keep it in good running order at all times. It's lost some compression over the last 200k miles, but its still going strong and I have no plans to replace it anytime soon. I'd simply repair it if something went wrong, even something major - it's way cheaper than buying new...
