  • Kayteg1, the picture quality is pretty good. I thought about trying to reuse my camera from my tailgate, but it seemed to be quite a bit of work to remount it. It wasn't going to be free either because you'd also need to extend the harness and fill in the area where the camera used to be. Due to the low cost of the Camera Source gear, that seemed to be the right call.
  • Went to Cartoys and upgraded my stereo, they installed a license plate backup camera. Worked great until I mounted the camper! The bumper and extended hitch were too far away from the camera. While doing a fuel filter, lift pump upgrade on my 2007 1/2 GMC 3500 I inspected the camera harness and determined that there was enough extra to move the camera further back on the hitch extension. Welded some light weight metal straps on the u-strap around the extension to remount the camera. If I remove the camper and hitch extension then I can easily remount the camera back on the original license plate mount!
  • How is picture quality on those?
I had something similar looking in the back-up system I bought from China and quality had lot to desire.
My camper has licence plate holder under camper bumper/sewer hose compartment, so not much use for that idea.
Ford wants $350 for its trailer camera, but I am thinking about removing the tailgate camera from my F350, maybe with its trim and mount it on back of the camper.
    Anyone tried that?
  • I used the GM version, but I went with the salt spreader one. It came with a mounting base and is mounted on top of the door. Quick and easy, plug and play.
I came close to not disconnecting it when off loading the camper, but I caught it in time. Glad to hear that I am not the only one.
My camper doesn't have a licence plate, that is main reason for going with the salt spreader one.

  • Thanks guys. I have the tailgate camera too. Looks like the way to go.

  • I've used it on my Ford F350. Same camera setup, they just change the wire connector for the truck. My Ford had a camera built into the tailgate and this plugs into the same truck-side wire. Then it just feeds your dashboard setup the same. Simple, quick installation as long as you know the wire you want to connect to on the truck.

The long bracket in the picture goes on your license plate holder and the camera can swivel up/down. My camera is now under the extended part of my camper and points out so I can see the trailer hitch extension and the ground beyond for parking. Works great.

The folks at camera-source were great to work with too.

  • I used the Ford one. It was good until I pulled the cable apart. I haven't tried to repair it yet. (I forgot it was plugged when when I unloaded my TC. :(

I don't know how much difference there is. The standard length cable wasn't enough to mount high, so it might be worth asking about a longer cable if that is your intent.
