I think if you dig into it, all manufacturers "derate" more than "reduce" the HP & torque on the heavier class trucks.
Something like the lighter are rated at the flywheel and the heavier are at the rear wheel?
So in actuality the power is quite similar, just rated/quoted differently.
The actual info is out there somewhere and I believe has been discussed on this forum in the past. :h
Regards the Ford/IH 6.0 diesel from what I remember they did detune the engines and not just derate. Actually what they did was to simply keep the tuning IH originally provided on the engines instead of applying the 100+HP upgrade tune Ford did to their other trucks. - jimh406Explorer IIIKayteg1, there are a few people who had a 6.0 and changed to the 6.7. Why don't you start a thread?
- Kayteg1Explorer IICan't think about any issue. Drove the rented 6l for about 300 miles, including pulling about 15,000lb over the Sierra. It did tow ok at freeway speeds, just moving from standing point was very poor.
It was pretty low mileage truck as well.
Would be interesting to hear from somebody who rented 6.7l and measure the performance.
Now thinking about it, my present 6l has poor start below 1600 rpm as well, but once it passes 2000 it really kicks.
Maybe at the time I was spoiled with 7.3 low end torque that could pull a house on idle. - v10superdutyExplorer

Could be rental truck derating?
My 1999 7.3l was rated about 225 HP from what I remember.
Still outperformed 6l from rental,... with more noise it is.
Part could be that manual with 7.3 gave me more options, but 7.3 was making overpasses on highest gears, while automatic with 6l would downshift.
Maybe the 6.0L was having an "issue"
Has happened once in a while...:W - Kayteg1Explorer IICould be rental truck derating?

I can understand the acceleration decrease, but the gearing should have been able to move your trailer with ease.
Not so. Additionally F550 would downshift on each freeway over pass.
I rented F550 w 6l when my F450 with 7.3l broke differential.
7.3l with manual was moving the trailer with no problem. I made topic about it on Truck forum and that was where I was informed about different engine tuning on heavy vehicles and possibly rentals.
Original impression when the truck with alleged 50% more HP is not moving the load like the old one was pretty bad.
