Are chips coming available?

DW has said for quite sometime as to why we can't maker things here. Local Freighliner dealer parts guy told me a couple weeks ago that he had to tell a customer w/ a brand new 6 wheeler box truck w/ 8K miles that he has to wait some 20+ weeks for some module.

They are still outsourcing. Multiple sourcing.

Now they are looking at Vietnam, Thailand and the Phils -- back up for Taiwan and China.

Bless them if they are going to do it in-house and here in the USA.

CEO's...not politicians. As politico's can only manage outsourcing via tariff's, which begets counter measures (like tariffs on our stuff going over there)

the auto makers are profitting from this so called chip shortage. If they weren't thay would charter a cargo plane and go get them some chips.

How many chips could they load on a 747 cargo plane?
It's the same with all these other shortages. If the companies weren't profitting from the shortage they would fix it.

Bizarre, how? It's not like you can just round up some stray dogs, feed them a hearty diet of copper, gold, and sand, and have them start crapping out microchips in a week. That kind of production takes YEARS to ramp up, from building the facility, to getting the equipment, to training the workforce, to working out the logistics.

You would be aghast at what companies "cheap out" on just to save a few dollars. Redundancy is one of them. They pound their chests about how they're all about redundancy and business continuance until the estimate comes in for how much it's going to cost... Then it becomes not so important.

That's assuming Biden's stern warning worked and China won't invade Taiwan despite the overfly and provocations.

Hey Bob, hope they gave him a loaner! Kinda hard to do without a work truck for that long, or have to rent.

It's not just the new vehicles either. It is also burdening the repair industry.

A friend of mine had his F150 crippled by a failed module. He has been now waiting over 3 months because Ford has no stock on a replacement. Big ouch when it is his work truck and it sits there at a Ford dealer waiting for parts.

I read that Ford has invested to build/partner it's own Chips. Can't imagine why it took this long. A major no no in manufacturing is not having redundancy for parts supply. Lack of Chips has crippled the entire auto industry and it took 2 years for them to start finding alternative sources or making them themselves? Bizarre.

Texas Instruments announced plans to build $30 billion chip production facilities in north Texas and Samsung plans to build a $17 billion chip facility near Austin. Looks like they may have well learned a lesson about relying on single sourcing from foreign countries. Will take 3-4 years to come on line though.
