I'm not a "Ford" man, but be it said, if this is the vehicle you're considering, go ahead and get it. Like you said, the bad reports are the ones that get noticed and the good things are never mentioned. So if you really want this vehicle, go for it. It might be one of the good ones, and it might be one of the "problemed" ones. For all the ramping and raving how great they are, if you get the ONE bad one, all those good reports won't matter anyway. Go with your 'gut' feeling, examine the vehicle, test drive it, have your mechanic inspect it, look up it's history on Car Fax or something like that, ..... (and then buy a chevy!) :)
I totally disagree with this logic. For the most part a vehicle develops a bad reputation for a reason. The 6.0 reputation is horrible the 6.4 while much better is still poor.
The whole point of researching and asking questions is to seek out the reliability and issues on the vehicle. Once you find the vehicle has a poor reputation why bother getting involved? Why ask for a history on a vehicle and then not make a informed decision based on those results?
I agree 100% of tarnished rep the vehicles are not bad, but there were enough problems and vehicles to develop/earn the poor reputation.
The 6.4 has a tarnished/questionable reputation. It developed this rep over a short period of time.
Sure you could ignore the naysayers and buy it anyway, But it would be more prudent to purchase a truck of the same era with a stellar/better performance history.
The 6.4 was a replacement for the 6.0 developed in an attempt to end the 6.0 mess. While an improvement over the 6.0. Ford did not get it right until the current 6.7.
The 6.4 currently has a marginal reputation due mainly to poor MPG, however it still suffers from a few holdover issues from the 6.0.
All used vehicles are a gamble but why not take advantage of the known history and buy a vehicle with an overall positive performance reputation? There is no point researching a product line if you are going to ignore the results.
