Are slides safe to use in the closed position?

We are looking for a double bunk travel trailer with a dinette and sofa in the slide.
We would like to be able to use it closed while stopped. We have two boys that will be jumping on everything and people have posted that slides can be damaged in the stowed position.
Are slide outs not capable of being used while in ? Or is it just a certain type of slide mechanism that has a problem..

Thanks,
John
  • The slide is not supported at all on the floor side when it is retracted. It is just hanging slightly above the floor.
Using it in this way will exert a LOT of leverage on it, and can cause damage.
So no, it should not be used in the retracted position.
  • When we purchased out trailer, we were told not to step on the slide.
In the closed position the slide floor is about an inch or so above the carpet.
We were told if we did so, the slide floor could separate from the slide wall.
We stay off the slide when stored.
I do not know who made the slide.

  • We were told during our initial walk-thru at the sales lot not to walk on it because it lacked proper support. Don't know how true that is, but I haven't been able to get a good view of how the slide is supported while retracted. I will step on it to reach for something, but we will not use it like when its extended.
  • We use our slide IN. sometimes. as the dinette and couch are on the slide..

fine for eating.. or a nap.
  • We have always used ours when closed...stopping for lunch, etc.
But, we don't jump up and down on them either.
