Are there any mfrs with bad overall reputations?

I've seen a lot of threads asking about quality and durability of various models, but I haven't seen anything like, "Stay away from manufacturer X, for these reasons." I was talking with someone recently who is beginning a search and knows no more than we did when we began. I'm wondering if there are any that they should stay away from on general principle because of poor quality. I'm assuming that people have opinions on this, and that they can express them freely here. If not, please say so!

  • I'll bite, since you asked. If you were a friend or a family member and you asked the same question, I would honestly tell you I would not buy myself another Forest River product, a Keystone product, or a Fleetwood product. While there are many that really love these brands, "I" have been disappointed with their quality.

That doesn't mean that there isn't happy owners, I just answer what I'd do if it were me.
  • yes all have their different problems, I had them with one TT I bought and at one time I worked at a RV dealership and the one thing I can tell you is stay away from entry level TT's. they are cheaply built. now, all TT manufacturing is not rocket science but the better or higher priced models are your best bet. better quality materials go into them.

To clarify what I said above; I am not aware of any current major mfg with a bad reputation.

  • What tends to happen is a manufacturer, brand, or model will become real popular. Dealers will begin ordereing the units due to demand from their customers and the manufacturer will have trouble keeping up with demand. In a rush to get as many units built as possible, quality slips. Bad reputation follows before the manufacturer is able to add enough qualified labor to keep up with demand.

Most manufacturers go through this and many have gone through it several times over the various product lines and models.

The really bad manufacturers end up out of business.

In the 15 years I have been reading several different RV forums no one manufacturer stands out as bad that is still in business today.

Weekend Warrior had a bad rep towards the end before going under. Same with a lot of Fleetwood products towards the end. Other than that, I have not heard of a mfg to avoid.
  • Someone may have a link, (I don't recall the website name) but there is a site that list all of the mfg and gives the customer reviews of each one.
  • This is a tough question to answer. Over the years we have had 4 trailers from different manufacturers. All were good and all had some problems.

All I can say with any of them is to keep up on the maintenance and it really helps to be handy with tools.
