I didn't read anyone "blaming" the schools or the youth directly. What I said was the schools have been and are essentially daycare centers for parents who choose to not make time (or effort) to impart proper rearing at home, but instead raise their children to become latchkey kids. When you're raised with few norms and standards with which to live by, it creates a vacuum in the mind of the child sucking whatever, as you said, "comes naturally". Children can be and are naturally disrespectful animals unless raised otherwise. I believe mandatory military service would fix a lot of the parenting problems with the youth in our culture. Asked anyone who's served if the military made them a better person. An overwhelming majority will say yes. Parents sure aren't stepping up.
At any rate, disrespectful kids generally grow into disrespectful adults.
As a person who grew up in a Military Family, ( Dad was a petty Officer, then a Warrant Officer later), I got used to lots of rules of both behavior and of obedience.
I do remember one time, (note 1 TIME,) that I told my Father that he was old, and did not know what the world was really like. ( He had served in the Navy from 1939, to 1969!), Since he was at the "Battle Of Midway, the Invasion of Saipan, and then in Korea, and ended up as OE Division Officer in Viet Nam, He told me he probably could imagine the world as a place of "Rainbows and Unicorn farts", but it just ain't so Steve, so straighten up, or else!
I now relish the memories of Dad, and the respect he demanded of both his men, and his kids.
I sure wish he was here! I lost him last August to lung cancer from asbestos, and Mom in 2012 to Colon Cancer.
Both of them were never braggarts or particularly memorable to other people, but they raised 5 GOOD kids, and we have gone on to be responsible adults. One is a research chemist for Medtronics, One is the retired director of Pacific Bell Central Trouble center, one is an RN in Riverside CA., and one is a retired Media Production and printing specialist, Me.
One is a buyer for a large electronics design and engineering firm. ( baby sister.)
All the boys served in the Navy, as Dad said it would either make a bum, or a man out of you!
I have 5 kids, and 11 Grandkids, along with 2 Great Grand Kids.
( yeah, we do multiply don't we !)
Ok, end of story. I think if more folks raised their kids with the expectation of respect, and of obedience, to both their friends,Family, and the public, instead of trying to be their kids "Best Friend", we would have more kids worth smiling about.
