Arrg! A Flat Tire

Airing up from around town psi to traveling with a TC psi. Inside rear is flat. Since I have only been using it around town and very short trips I haven't thumped for awhile. Why is it always the inside tire. Anyway, most likely a extension hose leak, happened before a few times. But I plan to leave on a two week fishing trip Sunday and looks like I might be leaving Monday instead. At age 70 those big tires aren't as easy to handle as they were ten years ago.
  • Just as I thought it would be, a broken seal on the connection between the tire valve stem and the end of the extender. Can't fix that so I put one one old extenders on that I had. Seems to be holding air.

On the subject of extenders, I would not suggest anyone using the type that do not have the internal rod to depress the tire valve stem. The one I had to put on is from my first set and does not have the rod. Had to make do with what I had. When I get back I am going to go to a truck tire shop and get long metal valve stems installed and do away with the rubber extenders. I got eight years service out of the current ones and this is the first problem. I did have problems with the ones that hold air pressure in the extenders. They both are made by Wheel Masters but I can not figure why they make the non rod type when the other works so well.

Anyway got it done, back hurts, wife keeps reminding me I have already had one back operation so be careful. Wives are good at that. One other thing, those long neck fillers at stations, most of the time would not do the job, angle interference, and that is the reason I went to extenders.
  • I would chuck the extensions. It may take a bit longer to check or add air but it's doable. That's why they make those long handled double headed pressure gauges and air chucks.
  • Starcraft, nope going up to Eagle Lake. Got a good friend who is going out around the waters in your area of the river but no luck so far. He has seen a few fish roll but I'm waiting for him to get a good report.

Got up this morning thinking I don't have to leave Sunday, I'm retired, so I think I'll make a change or two to the truck for more power at altitude before I go. Tire lost 40 psi overnight so one more coffee then grunt work.
  • Too bad you don't have someone in the military and be near a military post or base where they have the garage for the guys and gals to do work on their vehicles.

Or know someone who has their own garage that won't mind helping.

Oh well, the fish are waiting for you. This will give you the chance to get a few more things together.

Good luck. Stay cool and away from all the fires.
  • The problem with tire shops on Saturday is they have already taken reservations so even if you are there at 8 you keep getting pushed back so might as well do it at home and get it over with. Besides I don't think there is anything to fix and they really don't like DRW jobs, they like Civics and such. BUT, they have better tools and shops.

Only myself to blame, if you put things off too long they bite you.
  • I would be at a tire shop at 8am on Saturday and have them fix it then be off on schedule.
  • It never fails. I think our vehicles say "since he/she left me to sit for awhile (or worked me too hard) before going to have some fun, I'm going to mess with them and make them get me some special attention first."

I swear, my vehicles just seem to decide that. My cars especially if I was worn out with doctor appointments for the husband every week in Shreveport (about 120 miles from home OW) and I just wanted to run off with a girlfriend for a girls day to shop, go to the movies, etc. and the car says - "not so fast girlie".

Maybe it will be better to wait until Monday. It is like a neighbor used to say why she went to the boats on Mondays. She said everyone filled up the machines on the weekend and she got the best pots on Monday. Hope this means you will get a lot of fish or the weather will be more comfortable for fishing.
