Asbestos in my 1983 Monitor (Alumilite) TT

Hi guys, I purchased a 1983 Monitor or Alumilite TT about a month ago. I have been doing some work on it and finally got around to repairing a section of the bathroom ceiling that had been previously cut. Half way through I realized that I might be working with an asbestos fiber board. I stopped and got my respirator on and finished the demo. I am going to encapsulate the repair area to seal of the cut edges and replace the ceiling.
I guess long story not so short is has anyone ever had their 80's trailers tested or now anything about the materials they used in that era? I would really like to know for peace of mind if It contains asbestos. I know it was banned in 78' but stockpiles where depleted into the early 80's. Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance!
  • Except perhaps in the oven's lining, I doubt that asbestos was used in your rig. But you can buy a test kit if you're concerned enough.
  • The only way to know if your material contains asbestos is to fave a small piece set off to a lab (pricey) if you keep the material encapsulated there should be no issues..... as far as knowing whether a camper has asbestos or lead based paints is to have them tested but unless you tear into them for repairs should not be an issue formaldehyde (also cancer causing) is always another issue.

If you worried about all the possible hazards ...................
  • No asbestos was not banned in 1978 lead in paint was. You can go to the home improvement store today & buy products that contain asbestos but it probably says contains natural fibers. You home probably has some asbestos products. Your camper might if you were cutting into a transite board material. Something like 8 million tons of building material containing asbestos material is imported intro the US annually......
