Atwood hot water heater produces excessive heat on propane

The side of the trailer above the water heater "box" is so hot you can't touch it by hand. I'm afraid it will discolor the area, or worst case, catch on fire. The water heater seems to be burning a...

What do you consider a 'nice flame'?

Flame should be BLUE with tinges of YELLOW at tip.
It should not ROAR

Loosen screw on air shutter (slotted tube on burner tube) and slide it to achieve the proper, relatively quiet flame.
