Auxiliary fuel tank?

The used F350 I'm looking at is a SWB 2WD and apparently has only the standard 26 gal. fuel tank. Seems a little skimpy to me. How have others coped with this? Or is it even worth worrying about? Thanks.

No, you're thinking right. Our old Duramax had a 26gal tank and it was painful when towing. My half ton work trucks typically have 25-26 gal tanks which is annoying when I'm running the truck all day or driving long distances. Daily fillups just to do my job are a time suck.

If you're doing any serious towing or even if not, a small aux tank in the bed with a gravity system is a nice luxury to have for not only more range, but also fuel price savings if you can take advantage of that too.
  • If you have a gas engine in that truck, you'll just have to deal with a practical range of less than 200 miles when towing. Diesel of course would be better, but that's still a tiny tank for a big truck. With diesel you at least have the option of an in-bed tank. But if I had that truck I'd get aTitan tank installed. Depending on the year, you can get up to a 60 gallon tank that fits in place of the factory one.
  • we bought our truck to tow. 55 gallon inbed tank has been an awesome advangtage so we can fuel up where we want to. Custom tank to fit the space. My thinking was to get the aux tank when the truck was new to get the best use of the money spent.

It depends on the person with the truck really. I would never do without my 35 gallon auxiliary tank. It's a diesel, and the stock tank is 35 gallons, so I have about 70 gallons to travel on when the tanks are full.

I love the freedom to stop when I want to stop and not when the truck forces me to stop. I don't have to spend all my rest breaks at noisy, stinky truck stops/gas stations. I fill up once a day, or less if I don't travel many miles, and I usually fill up after the trailer is dropped off at the stopping point for the night. IMO there are many pluses and no cons, for me anyway.

I feel exactly the same way. Except my F250 is 6.2 gasser, so I obviously have to hit the gas pump more often. I have short box and never worry about bed space. Most time it is empty when towing the fifth wheel.

  • I have the same size tank on my F250, it works fine. Since, even when towing, the truck can go farther than I can, without a stop.

I immediately replaced the 26 with a 50 gallon Titan tank. I don't want bed space taken up with a tank.
