I liberally sprinkle Goldbond medicated powder on my awning as I roll it up for long term storage. I actually use a generic store brand, but make sure it includes Zinc Oxide in the ingredients! Zinc Oxide inhibits mold growth - it's used in paint as a mold inhibitor. As far as cleaning... elbow grease!
