Batteries

Not exactly RV related, but I figured I might get some help here.

I need to replace one of the batteries in my Lund fishing boat. I bought a Interstate Deep Cycle Pro 27 3 years ago and it is dead - seems they should have lasted longer, but that is another story.

I have done a bit of calling around and found that a replacement battery from Interstate is $150.95, AutoZone is $104.99 and WalMart is $79.97. Autozone and Walmart have a 1 year warranty. I didn't ask about Interstate.

Are all batteries the same? Is there any reason I shouldn't buy the battery from Walmart?
  • I have Exide batteries in my vehicles and boat. They have a 6 year replacement warranty.
In my boat I had the interstate battery for starting and trolling motor. It only
lasted me for 4 years, was the most expensive battery that lasted the least
amount of time. My excide batteries are only 2 years old, so I don't know
how good they will be yet.

I believe in general, farm stores are a very competitive place to shop for automotive and light truck needs.

I noted my local Runnings farm store (Exide batteries) normally beats Walmart battery, oil and filter prices unless Walmart has a sale. I do have a set of Walmart marine start/deep cycle batteries that sold so cheap on sale, it was worth the compromised multi-specs that dual use batteries suffer from. Runnings doesn't yet list web pricing, but might be worthy of stopping, if one lives in the upper midwest area.

Tractor Supply does have stores in Colorado. They sell an Exide group 27 deep cycle for $80.

I saw 6v Golfcart batteries at a good price locally in Sams Club. Pricier for pairs (12v), but supposedly the best for strictly deep cycle needs.

  • Hope you don't mind a slightly off topic question:

Three years seems like a short life for the battery you're replacing- any idea of the cause-of-death?
  • My boat batteries lasted for many years using a trickle charger to keep them charged. Same with all equipment that isn't used regularly. Wally battery will probably be fine.
  • Thanks for the replies.

The battery is one of two used for electronics & my trolling motor. I have a separate battery for starting.

I am pretty disappointed with the Interstate battery. I cycle the batteries when I am using them, making sure I am not on the same battery all the time. I use a battery tender when the boat is stored, and it is stored in a heated garage.

On edit, I just saw that Bass Pro has the same series 27 on sale for $99.

Right now, leaning towards the Walmart battery.
  • I think you may be needing a battery for a trolling motor based on your post, in that case you need a deep cycle marine/rv battery. If strictly for starting the motor you need a marine starting battery or you could use a marine deep cycle/cranking battery for starting you motor and using a trolling motor off the same battery. There is definitely a difference in battery design for these different applications, e.g. bigger lead plates, more lead plates, etc.

I have purchased the last several batteries for my boat from Advanced Auto. Don't know if you have one in your area, but their batteries have a 1 year warranty and you can usually get a 15 to 25% discount if you order on line. If your local auto store has it in stock, you can pick it up the same day. Advanced auto has about the same prices you quoted before the discount. Hope this helps.
  • I bought 2 Everstarts from Wally World almost four years ago for my truck. I could'nt find any in stock anywhere else so I had no choice. Have not had any issues.
  • I have a Gregor with trolling motor and two fish finders 25 hp electric start motor, I run a Wal Mart Everstart group 27 marine battery,, this is my second one, first one lasted seven years.. I surely will use and buy there batteries!

I also have a Lund boat and my prior Walmart Everstart deep cycle battery lasted over 8 years. The replacement is also an Everstart and will be in it's 3rd year this spring. The start battery is 6 years old and checks out okay but I will replace it this spring. I make sure they are always fully charged and have an onboard charger to insure that happens. IMO you can't go wrong with Walmart's battery for the application.

    No, not at all.

There are only a few battery makers in the world...........BUT......each vendor may have different building spec's for their battery.

For instance, CAT has their own spec's for their batteries.
