Battery charging question

Hi All,
Two questions

1. I store my rv trailer and I’m wondering how I maintain the charge for my batteries. Especially if the rv trailer sits for 3 weeks.

2. When winterizing the rv trailer. Do I bring the batteries home and trickle charge them? If yes. What’s a good trickle charger to use?

Thanks
Dave
  • Our trailer is in use in warm climates during the winter. However our boat remains in cold Ontario.

For the past 38 years I have looked after the batteries by fully charging them late Oct early Nov and then disconnect ALL loads. In the spring in Apr put a charger on them to bring them back to full charge.

In cold weather with no load batteries are fine all winter load left in place.
  • Hi All,
Thanks for the information! This is a great group. I've posted to questions so far and no one has been rude :)

    Thanks again,
    Dave
  • When covered my TT’s batteries are kept full with a 10 amp water resistant controller and small solar panel.
  • I am with the group that disconnects the battery if the TT is setting for s month or two. If it is setting all winter I bring the battery into the house.
  • For short term (couple months or less) just disconnect the battery. For longer periods after disconnecting use a battery tender or every month or so connect to a charger for a day. Either way be sure to check the fluid level periodically.

My trailer sits in unpowered storage when not in use. Anytime I know it's not going to be used for a while then I'll pull the batteries and put them on the trickle charger at home.
  • If you have electricity available where you store your trailer, just plug your shore power cord in.
If there is no power available, either use a small solar charger or a battery tender as others have said.
    Happy camping!
