Bed width?

It's probably been asked but searching yielded nothing. What bed width is needed for a TC? Contrary to popular belief with the new models of trucks there isn't a standard bed lol. Length ranges now from 5'7"-8' and width from 48"-61" if I go the custom bed route I wanna have my numbers right.

  • Yeah above the wheel wells is where the 61" came from however a rambox dodge is 48" all the way up and I have only found a couple people that tried a TC with it. One was a caribou 6.5 the other a lance 881 neither fit that truck.

Some camper models flare out behind the wheel wells so that's probably where the 61" comes from. I'd bet they're all 48" or less between the wheel wells and forward.
  • Also keep in mind the there are different heights of bed rails (sides) depending on year and manufacturer.

Also newer trucks have smaller tailgate openings, i.e. you measure the width of the top of the rails in the front of the bed it will be far wider than the opening for the tailgate. This creates problems if you buy a few year old camper and a brand new truck.
  • Any OEM truck bed is going to be at least over 48" between the wheel wells, so it can fit a sheet of plywood.... therefore a camper is going to be probably slightly less than 48".

If truck manufacturers are posting widths of 61", it isn't the width between the wheel wells, it must be the width between the bed rails.
