When I say rubber mat I mean a DeeZee or similar. A spray in liner is just a thick coat of expensive paint. It does not affect whether you need/want a mat or not in my view. It's harder to scratch than the factory paint, but still just paint.
I did get a new drop in bed liner, a Pendaliner. It is nearly identical to the one I bought for the '99, except about 1/2 or 2/3 the thickness. Everything is lighter these days I suppose :).
