I thought I'd start up this thread for the benefit of newbies and those who are thinking about purchasing a truck camper. So what are the benefits of owing a truck camper? Mike as was mentioned "no insurance" in most cases. However my insurance company does not cover the camper in the case of damage to the camper unless I have the camper insured separately.

Mike - I have always thought having the Truck Camper would be my final setup...It just never worked out for us...With just the two us now the Truck Camper has abit more room then we currently have with our OFF-ROAD POPUP setup.The Truck Camper would offer another layer of security also compared to what my current OFF-ROAD setup does for us.I have too much junk to bring along and there is question what to do about running around the neighborhood after you setup somewhere.I know some folks might drop the camper and use the truck but it just doesn't really sound like a good idea to run off an leave your camper shell sitting on the ground in a strange location.I would definitely have to bring along a utility trailer behind my Truck Camper.As for as having all the comforts of home and ability to keep all of my toys and things I love to do on my trip I know the truck camper would be perfect for us...Roy Ken

Do a search on my previous posting reference this issue. Search "truck camper insurance".

The number 1 and number 2 advantages for us is the ability to haul trailers behind the camper and the ability to drop the camper at a site and have a drive around vehicle.

The (2) things that I don't like are:

1) You have to put everything away and disconnect if you are using hook-ups to
drive anywhere.

2) You cannot carry anything in the bed of your truck unless you remove the
camper

I have owned my TC since 1983 and its been in the family since new in 1969. I think I have the best of both worlds. I built a trailer for mine that will also carry one quad along with a quad in the back of the truck. Since I prefer to boondocks I now have 80 gallons of fresh water, 100 pounds of LP, 20 gallons of gasoline, and solar. I can be off the grid for quite some time. Besides, I could have the camper off my trailer and on my F-350 in about one hour if I had the plugs and guides installed on my truck.
It all depends on what you want to do with them. The greatest asset it the versatility of the TC.

The truck camper is the best in either want the flexibility of the single unit or towing something. Also you can modify the camper very easily for want to do. I also feel there are more choices out there for every type of truck than ever before. The future is bright again for the truck camping community.

Not long ago a friend of my GF who knows less-than-nothing about RVs asked me to explain why anyone would want a truck camper and I said, "Imagine taking a hotel room with you everywhere you go."

She seemed to get it immediately (or she was being polite LOL)...

Don't forget all the "cousin Eddie" comments from your coworkers...until the look inside.

I forgot to mention this in my previous post but a huge plus for me was being able to get down to the campsites where my buddies all tent camp. This is at offroad parks so there would be no pulling a trailer down there due to road/path conditions and trees.

Is anybody like me in the fact that there is no towing involved? That is my main reason why I got a TC. Although if one day I where were to buy some kind of toy I could tow it behind my TC. Also TC's are just plain cool.

We got ours because it still allows me to tow my rockcrawler and will get the wife out wheeling with me since she now has somewhere comfortable to sleep. And the dog loves it. :D

Great point on the time to heat up. The same goes for running the AC. Doesn't take much time to get where you want the temp in a TC.
