Four,
We found the state of California campgrounds in this area to be not very well laid out and very expensive for what you get. We tried to find a suitable dry camp some where in the vicinity and found one, well inland of the attractions in the coastal mountains. Like Yosemite, only on a state scale, It's just another example of an area that is being loved to death by tourists. If you want to be close to the action, staying at an overpriced campground in the vicinity may be the best option. To defray the horrid condition of the State budget, lawmakers have turned to charging more for services used by out-of-staters: airport taxes; campground fees as a way to make a minuscule dent in the shortfall. We love the Redwood corridor and always fell like we've come home when we camp there. There are many venues besides the Redwood State Park. We especially enjoy Grizzly Creek State Park, somewhat inland but still in the redwoods.. My brother Jim taught school in Arcata, CA for a time and and due to its remoteness always referred to the area as 'behind the redwood curtain'.
As with the entire west coast of N. America, if you can go there other than summer and early fall, you have a better chance of walzing from campground to campground without reservations. We've stayed at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in the area, off-season.
