When I was last there (September time frame), I stayed in a campground along the avenue of the giants, Mad River RV park and Patrick Point SP.
Mad River RV in Arcata is immaculate (almost sterile), has everything including a Mexican restaurant next door and a breakfast place around the corner (i.e. no need to drive). Also an interesting bike trail along the coast from there. Cost $$.
Patrick Point SP is further north, quiet and the appeal is agate beach. Even I could find some. No hook ups with coin operated showers. Large enough for short bike rides. I sat on the bluff for about an hour watching a small gray whale feeding.
When I last traveled here, California state parks were not accepting credit cards. Be prepared with cash. Be prepared with exact cash where iron rangers rule.
