Best in the US?

Going away for 6-8 weeks later this year. From the right coast to the left coast and back. We are picking places to see and things to do now to plan our trip.

What would you consider a must see or thing to do?

Oh yeah! We are in our 60's and jumping out of airplanes is not on our list!;)

Thanx

Huh ?????????? :? :? my average set up time is only several minutes ! Its one of the many advantages of owning a truckcamper
  • You're talking 6000 miles minimum. In 6 weeks you'll have to be selective. Head somewhere. See that area in depth, with only short stops on the way. Then move on, and repeat. You don't want to spend the whole 6 weeks setting up and taking down your rig every day.

If it were me I would target perhaps 6 destinations, areas with lots to see around them.
  • Bugs,
Jeanie and I are still planning a 12 week trip, clockwise around the U.S. boundary states in the
TC starting about Sept. 1st and ending around New Years Day. I got very little response to this querrie on the TC forum as apparently no one had completed a trip like this, at least no one on here. I then posted the question on the Expo Portal forum with no takers. Finally, I typed in,
    tripadvisor.com
and got a lot of reaction. Seems the tripadvisor forums have many assigned local responders and i found a LOT of localized info about our trip. Here's the link to the post i put on there:

Way lots of info. Your perimeters seems to be too wide open. What they ask is what are your interests (as above), as this sets some perameters for your trip. Try it out.
    regards, as always, jefe
  • Best thing to do is your own research. With todays computers my wife will sit down, plan a route, and then find us things to do and see. With the thousands of things out there to do and see, you've got to be the one who decides what to see in the time alotted. As stated, most of it all depends on what route you are taking out and back.
  • Must see:

    Yosemite
    Grand Tetons (and Yellowstone)
Utah (practically the entire state - Moab, Capitol Reef, Escalante, Zion, Bryce)
Grand Canyon (only been to North Rim - spectacular)
Tahoe, and countless other spots in the Sierra
    Death Valley (winter only)
California coast (Cambria, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Big Sur, Point Reyes, Bodega Bay, Jenner, Ft. Bragg, Mendocino)
Oregon Coast (Astoria, Cannon Beach, Newport, Florence, Brookings)
    Crater Lake (OR)
Northeastern Oregon (Baker City, Enterprise, Joseph, Sumpter)
    Mt. St. Helens (WA)
    Mt. Shasta (CA)
    Mt. Lassen (CA)
    Mt. Rainier (WA)
    Sonora Desert (AZ)

Other ideas that are on my list but that I haven't yet seen:

    Monument Valley
    Dinosaur National Monument
    Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore
    Glacier Park
    Independence Rock
  • Should we consider that you are from NH and you've already covered Midwest to east coast and your really asking from St. Louis archway west? I'm thinking you should make a loop going up to S. Dakota and start hitting lots of the west's National Parks and then make your return loop (depending on the time of year) through Death Valley, hit some Utah parks before heading home. Ooops, you're going need more time!!
  • I would look at Museums, Zoos, Aquariums, National Parks, Places of Historical Interest, to name a few. When I'm on long trips I will stop in a Library in an area that looks interesting to me to find out more about the area that only the locals know about. I have seen many interesting things that way. I need to find out your route before I can give you specific destinations to go look at.

    Bob in Calif.
  • I would start at the National Park Service's website, www.nps.gov. There you will find outstanding points of interest, from natural wonders, historic places, and cultural spots. That will keep you busy!!!!!!
  • What are your interests?
What states will you be visiting?

I like to use Roadside America when traveling. Maybe you can find something of interest along your route.
