Best Truck for Pulling

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with Cumings Diesel. Want to get a newer truck for my 31' Open Road Travel Trailer 11,500 weight. Looking at Fords. Anyone have a Ford and how does it pull and how is it on gas?
Diesel gets 10 miles per gallon pulling trailer. Heard the newer Dodges are terible on gas.

Or ... you could put a tuner on your 5.9L Ram and keep about $50K in your pocketses. That truck will tow that trailer just fine.
  • I agree with the above as well, any 2500/3500 series truck will do the job. I personally would look for a 3500/350 in one of the big three.
  • I am a Ford guy so I have a 350 gasser but I did look at Chevy and Dodge. All are about the same as others have said. Price between the 250 and 350 is about the same, payload for me is 3800+ and would have been around 3200 if I got the 250. Diesel trucks brought the towing to 18,000 I believe, the 350 I have is just over 12,000.

Where ever you get the best deal will be good. I get about 14 mpg highway not towing and something less than that when towing.
  • The Ford will do well as will any of them if purchasing new. Buy what you like but just know that typing the word Ford on this forum will bring out a slew of Ford haters who refuse to be objective due to deep seeded issues.
  • I am with the above. There is so little difference in the big 3 that the best truck for towing for YOU is the truck that fits YOU the best. Try all three and get the one that YOU like best.
And yes, I do have a Ford.

I seriously doubt anyone here on the Forum has a Ford. I never see them anymore....

Seriously, Pulling your 11,500 lbs trailer is going to get you around 10 mpg no matter what the badge on the hood says.
Most of us would take any of the new big 3 trucks and be more than happy with it.

My only suggestion is that you should consider a 1 ton for the payload and not really much more money.

  • Sorry, had to do it! It was such an open ended question "Best Truck For Pulling".

They all have their good things and bad things. Find what you like and go with it.

I'm my opinion, all the new 2500/3500 trucks are nice. They all will get similar mileage, and all tow similar when they're optioned out the same.

Find the truck that you like best, they're all good.
