Blue Ox Sway Control Users - Question

Hello,

I have the Blue Ox Sway Pro hitch setup on my Coleman 31' TT. Tongue weight is between 920 and 950 or so though I will start by saying I've never taken it to a set of scales to weigh. That is what the specs on it say. When I got it, I got the 1500lb spring bars as was recommended by one dealer and by a Blue Ox rep. Now I'm having some towing issues. As I travel down the road, once in a while it feels as though the camper just veers off to the right. Never seen anything but it is a very disconcerting feeling. I'm wondering if the spring bars are just too heavy and are causing me to be too "light" in the back of the TV or if it is making it to stiff or something. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

  • I've heard both opinions: go too much and don't go too much. I thought the way that you do and went too much. Who knows! How does one measure the weights properly? Tongue, overall, etc.?it has been suggested by many that I do that and I want to heed that good advice. Seems like tongue weight as compared to overall could be a problem. Just want to be safe on the road! I won't tow it otherwise.

Thanks Jeremy. My tongue weight appears to be greater than yours but you're finding the 1000 spring bars insufficient?

I don't think I'm noticing anything because of it but I just 'feel' like I should have the 1500lb bars vs the 1000lb bars because I have a feeling I'm very close to that.
  • If the specs say the tongue weight is around 950lbs then I would suspect that your actual tongue weight when you are ready to camp will be at least 1200lbs or maybe more. You need to take the trailer to a scale and fine out just what it is. You will probably be quite surprised. I think your Blue Ox salesman was probably right about on the money with his recommendation of 1500lb bars. The scales will tell you what kind of weight distribution you are getting.

You might try using a little less/more pressure on the bars and see if that helps. Also, you may just be feeling the normal wiggle that everyone gets when a gust of wind hits, or a passing truck goes by, or an uneven road surface.

  • Do you want to trade? I have a 30' Aspen Trail with a Blue Ox Sway Pro that the dealer recommended 1000lb spring bars and I have to wonder if they just arent' enough. The unloaded tounge weight of my trailer is 815lb and obviously once I load up that's going to be a bit more.

In response to your question though. I don't have that feeling when I drive but my trailer sits completely level and now that I've put airbags on my TV, it also does (but I've had to adjust the setup on my hitch). I'd a) check everything at the scales and b) look to adjusting your hitch.
