Is that the price installed?

I've always found that it's easier (and about the same cost) to replace the entire backing plate/brake assembly rather than replacing shoe alone.

Since you are in Washington, check out Six Roblees - they are a local trailer parts warehouse.

Try a commercial brake / clutch relining shop.
There's a local shop here that relines clutches and brakes, and they have trailer brake shoes on an exchange basis. They also have a brake lathe capable of turning both surfaces on an electric-brake drum.

MY dealer just did a brake replacement including new hubs on my fifth wheel. The invoice shows $80.44 each for "backplates", which I assume are brakepads. That does not include labor.

That should be the full brake backing-plate/magnet/shoes assembly. This is the best way to do it IMO. It replaces all the wear parts, and the labor savings should more than cover ordering shoes alone.

Backplates are the complete assembly which is the steel plate, magnet, linkages, springs and the shoes.. Fully assembled, all the dealer had to do is remove the drum then 4 bolts cut wires and pull the backplate off..

Then to install reverse the above.

What your dealer did was buy the backplate for about $40 THEN DOUBLED the price.. Pretty much NORMAL for repair shops to considerably markup the parts but doubling the price is highway robbery to say the least..

Tractor Supply USED to carry backplates and drums but lately they have pretty much gutted my local store down to nothing.. That is where I bought new drums..

But plenty of online sources if you don't mind waiting a few days..

X2, you get all new parts including magnet.

Gosh I love RV.net. You all saved me big dollars and pointed me to a good supplier. Being from a generation who loved rotary dial phones and a computer/cell phone hater, I have trouble finding things like this on the internet.

So, ordered 4 backing plates/shoes from etrailer for about $120. I've done lots of brake work on cars, trucks and trailers, so I can see how easy this should be.
