Brakes not working - Update

We have a 2003 Prowler TT. Seems like the brakes are not stopping the TT. You can hear them but they do not seem to stop it. Any idea of what the cost would be to have them fixed. Do not want to spend alot on this well used TT.
Thanks for any imput,

Got a quote of $50 for estimate but thought it may be in $300 range.

We sold it to a man who is just setting it up to have it as a homebase.

He travels for work. Yes he knows the brakes are bad.

  • When TT is hooked up and brakes applied a buzzing sound is heard but no brakes are working. We pulled the break-a-way switch and no brakes. Got an estimate for diagnostics of $50 applied to work if done.

Would like some more input from here as to what we may expect.
  • My braking was noticible weaker a couple years ago. Adjusted the brakes put them back like new.

If you want to check them yourself, jack one wheel slightly off the ground. Pull the break away switch and try to rotate the wheel. It should lock up if the brake is working electrically. Put the breakaway switch back in. Using a cheap brake adjustment tool from auto parts store, adjust that brake. (Google RV brake adjustment for info and videos). Lower wheel and repeat with other wheels. Pretty simple.

If one or more does not work when the break away switch is pulled, then it will take some troubleshooting to find out why.

However, depending on the sound when you "hear them", it could be the brake linings are worn down and need new brake shoes.

    $500

    Maybe more, maybe less.
  • If you did the work yourself (approx 15-20 mins per axle) the cost would be aprrox $40 each for a complete brake assembly. If new drums are needed then add another $50 per axle.
  • Can you manually push the lever on the brake controller to get more braking power?

    Adjustments and or bad wiring..

A 2003, I would bet that the wiring has a lot of corroded connections.

Does the break away system work (IE pull the break away lanyard pin and the brakes MUST LOCK the wheels on the trailer)?
