I pull a 09 NuWay (Hitchhiker)5er and for the last two years had my local shop check my breaks as the truck this week had about 140,000 miles on it. They just told me the brakes have about 50% left. No need to do anything. I argued I pull a big RV up and down mountains and worry about the brakes. And with that mileage how can they still be good? Told now brakes last longer than they used to. 140 k miles and still have good brake pads... how can this be?

Believe him. The brake material and rotors are much better than they use to be. GM got it right on this. I have an 03 GMC(tow vehicle) with 125k miles and brakes are still at 65%. I also have an 01 3500 Chevy that weighs 11k lbs with a plumbing utility bed. I replaced the front pads only at a 100k miles. Didn't even need to turn the rotors. I finally installed a new set of rotors and pads at a 190k miles.

So you at 140 is really awesome.I think a lot of it is driving habits. You must be doing something right. My wife, on the other hand, tears a set of front brakes off about every 12 to 14,000 miles on every vehicle I have bought for her. doesn't matter what it is, she smokes the brakes off it with her horrible driving habits.So yeah, you're doing very well! Maybe you could come teach my wife.....

My neighbor is a GM parts guy. He said it's not unusual for the GM pick up brakes to last 200K or more. Just flush the fluid on a regular basis.

I have 240,000 on my 03 2500hd and I have never replaced the front pads. Replaced the rear pads @ 225,000. I am an ASE certified master tech. I have had customers make me change their pads when they were not worn out because "it has 150,000 they have to be worn out".

If your truck spent all it's time in Texas then I can see why you've had no rust issues.

Am I safe in making the assumption that you were speaking of brake, fuel and transmission lines blowing out being a problem in certain areas of the country and not being a nation wide problems as I thought you meant?

2010 2500 GMC diesel - 603,000 on front pads and rotors still on truck. I'm gonna replace soon do to rattle, pads a still at about 1/2. Rears pads were replaced at 392k. Insides wore faster than outer pads.

My 08 now has 92,100 miles and the pads both front and rear are nearly 80%. Rotors are like new, heck the entire truck top to bottom is like new. Had to have the transfer case control module reprogrammed last year, and my mechanic kept asking me "what year is this"?? He couldn't believe it was a 5 year old truck by it's appearance.

Although the brake pads may last, the rotors do not and rust to the point of no return. Or how about the brake, fuel and transmission lines. I have had our truck's brake fluid flushed 2 times. steering fluid flushed once, radiator flushed 2 times, rear diff changed 4 times (my self doing this job) and just had all hosed changed. 68000 miles but time not miles is my thinking. Great truck to tow our alpenlite. Plus oil change once a year(6000) miles and fuel filter once or same as oil 6000 miles. Last 2 in my garage again.

My biggest worry is for the engine to rev up and blow.

No worries. This engine is computer controlled and the puter won't let that happen.
