Bringing kayak with you...

I tow with a pickup that has a 6.5' bed and am thinking about getting a hard-sided kayak---preferably a tandem kayak---to bring with us.

I was thinking it would just need to be strapped down in the bed with a good bit of it hanging out over the tailgate.

Do any of you do this? How does it work? Have any size suggestions for how long of a kayak this would work for?

  • Hullavator by Thule is a wonderful thing. Stopped bringing my tandem 15' kayak bevause of the hassle.

Since the Hullavator, the kayak comes every time. Quite expensive and may not fit your rig but I thought I'd mention it in case it works for you.

If you do decide to get one, make sure you get the new model they just released a month ago.
  • I made a device that I welded to a my hitch stinger to support long lumber but it worked great for my kayak. That said they sell them, not necessarily for kayaks but for long loads. Pay attention to state law requiring a flag or light. Most states say anything hanging over by 4' requires one or both. Ditto on inflatables which is what I now have. The Intex that sells for a little over $100 on Amazon seems to be well made but I've only used it once.

The tandem kayak we have (hard sit on top) is 13'6", which is about normal for tandems. That will give you an idea of how long it might be.

Does it work okay traveling with about half the kayak sticking out the bed of the truck?
  • We bought two inflatable tandem kyaks. Easy to prep and strap down to the truck when we hit our destination. The other toys we take are inflatable paddle boards. The board take up even less room and kids love them. The kayaks are the "dragonfly two" and the boards are the 9'10 "tower"

  • I routinely haul a 16 ft canoe on top of my TV. When the cap is off I use a "U" shaped frame in the bed.
