Broke a leaf spring. Shop says I should instal bigger ones?

Hi all,

While returning from a desert trip, the front driver's side leaf spring on dual axle my 2014 Forest River Evo 2160 broke. Of course, this quickly destroyed a couple tires. I had it towed on a flatbed to an independent repair shop. The shop says I should consider upgrading to heavier duty springs for "only a little more money". Will installing heavier duty springs do any good if I keep the existing axles? Also, could heavier duty springs simply cause something else to break next time?

Any input is appreciated.
  • Axles, springs, shackles, bolts(wet) and a moride system after twice breaking springs. You have no idea how close the weight margin is on these campers.
  • Without knowing actual weight and spring ratings, any answer is a guess. What you want is the correct rating for the load, or it will prematurely fail OR ride harshly and beat up your trailer.
  • X2 but I,ve been around a spring job over the years and they claim you should change both sides, so things are the same strengh.
  • Having broken 2 spings on my 5th wheel, I would vote for heavier springs bu also replace all the shackles and bolts as well. 1 tow on a flat bed tow truck for a 30 mile trip costs $1200. Good Sam Emergency roadside service payed for the total tow:):):)
