  • sabconsulting, you're absolutely correct. I missed that CoG on the trailer. If you look at the photo, the 5er pin is between the rear tire and the back end of the trailer. So, all that weight of the 5er trailer most definitely makes the front of the car-carrier trailer zero weight, which will cause nothing but fish tailing on that car-trailer. Can't imagine how that would cause the 5er to track then. Yikes, the more I study this photo, the scarier it gets! Good point there!
  • Only a complete idiot would attempt to tow this setup anywhere. A recipe for disaster and not legal anywhere I know of.
  • Ouch!

I'd be interested to see how that combination handled the hills - both up and down.

I assume the U-Haul trailer is only connected to the car trailer brakes and that the 5er isn't braked at all when configured like this.

I hope the truck is well tied down to the trailer - going up hill those tiedowns need to not only restrain the truck but the weight and drag of the 5er.

Plus what is the CoG of that car trailer - with the nose weight of the 5er on it - if the CoG of that trailer is behind the centre of the axles it might get pretty unstable - I certainly wouldn't want that combination snaking down the road towards me.

  • Of course that won't work with a TC. The box on the Uhaul is too small to fit the truck camper in. ;)

I have always wanted a TC from way back in my Arizona days in the 60s/70s.

Perfect for my Radio Ops setups and with 4WD can get back into the most secluded place.

The problem that always turned me away was storage of supplies and other items that I seem to must have based on what I carry with me today in my OFF-ROAD POPUP setup.

I would not know what do if I didn't have a front deck and my pickup truck covered bed for carrying all of this stuff with me on every trip.

The answer I guess is towing a utility trailer behind the TC.

The other turn-off for me would be not having my truck to use for scouting out everywhere around where we camp. I see alot of talk of pulling the TC off the the truck and sitting on the ground but that would worry me sick I suppose not knowing if my TC Camper would still be at the camp site when I return or not...

The answer for this I suppose is to mount he TC camper on a flat trailer like this - then you can use your truck for other things..

Before long you will probably end up towing something behind that like a boat or a small utility trailer.

Might as well get one of those AUSSIE OFF-ROAD TRAILERS thats Bob Ryan shows us all the time from down under or at least one of the Starcraft 36RT series units and start building up my own off-road unit...

Too many catch 22's for me I guess...

  • I'm pretty sure you'd have no problems putting a truck camper on that pick-up truck, provided the car-carrier trailer can handle the weight. Legally, you're towing a single trailer with cargo on it.

BUT ... this configuration in your photo ... NOW THAT's MIND BOGGLING! I wonder if that's even legal? I wonder if U-Haul knew what his intent was with that truck and trailer? Probably not. They're pretty picky on what tows behind their trucks.

Buzzcut1, did you snap this photo? This is one I want to copy off and save! I'm speechless on that set-up, and I THOUGHT I'd seen it all!
